I generally avoid writing up multiple wizards from the same source material, but Saruman the White is one worthy wizard. I’ve never actually read the Lord of the Rings books, so I only know Saruman as Christopher Lee with long, flowing rock hair. That’s a good way to be known, though.

According to Wikipedia, Saruman has some A+ aliases, including Curumo, White Messenger, Man of Skill, and Sharkey. I feel like I would be an enviable dude to have even just one of those nicknames. Note to readers and all people: please start calling me something cool like that.

I was disappointed when Saruman did not appear in the version of Return of the King that made it to theaters. Thankfully, he did make the cut for those huge extended edition DVDs that I watched a million times a decade ago and which I have not touched since. Perhaps it is time for a revisitation! I think and hope he is also in the upcoming Hobbit movie(s).

Saruman also appeared in Bakshi’s animated Lord of the Rings movie. I don’t think he looks as imposing as Christopher Lee, but I do love this particular cartoon wizard look: the face peering out of an explosion of white hair. It’s how I prefer to draw wizards myself. You can imagine his face sinking back into his hair as a defense mechanism against natural predators.

I was about to write that I don’t think wizards have natural predators, and then I remember I wrote a song about that very topic, and I started wondering how often I’ve traveled this same road of thought. Brains are mysterious!

The Where’s Waldo books are fun. They have been ripped off a billion times by various “search and find” books, but not usually with the level of style you’ll find in one of the Martin Hanford originals.

My favorite when I was a kid was The Great Waldo Search, which took place in different fantasy environments. By this book, Hanford’s skill had really solidified, and he was able to put that to good use by coming up with some crazy settings that allowed him to cut loose. The book also introduced Whitebeard, who is also hiding on every page. You can find him on this one, for instance.

Next time you come across a Waldo book, I recommend looking through the illustrations, not to find Waldo, but just to take in all the detail. I distinctly remember the spread with the warring blue and red monks as being pretty awesome. Also impressive is the famous drawing where every figure is Waldo, where you are supposed to find a particular one.

I couldn’t find an image of the monk illustration to put in this post, but I did find a screenshot from the Great Waldo Search for NES, a game which also features Whitebeard:

I’ll leave you with some great Wizard Whitebeard graphitti, which you’ll have to click here to see because someone disabled downloading on their Flickr account.

My band put out a 20 minute song once, on this album. I haven’t done anything truly lengthy lately, as I’ve been trying to keep my own work fairly concise, and Hex Map has yet to break the 10 minute barrier. I would like to make some very long music soon, though. I have an idea for a 20 minute epic rock Christmas song. I think that is fairly virgin territory.

Here are some classic longies. You can listen to these and burn through a good chunk of your day.

Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Ween – Poopship Destroyer (live)

Morrissey – The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils (this one is more “long for Morrissey”)

Iron Butterfly – Inna Gadda Da Vida

The Edgar Winter Group – Frankenstein (live) (Check out the intro to this video at the very least!)

Smashing Pumpkins – Gossamer (This is quite long)

I wanted to include Ween’s live version of “Vallejo” from Painting the Town Brown and Oingo Boingo’s studio version of “Change,” but neither are on Youtube. For those, you’ll have to track down the CDs!

Wizball is a 1987 computer game by Jon Hare and Chris Yates, co-founders of Sensible Software, published by Ocean (who also put out the amazing Wetrix). It was released on the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Atari ST, and PC. The music was composed by Martin Galway, and the box art was painted by Bob Wakelin.

The game, like almost every great game, is a weird one. It’s about a wizard who turns himself into a bouncing green ball to collect color droplets, sometimes with the help of his cat, who is also a ball. I suggest you listen to the game’s title music as you read about it:

I’m going to edit the Wikipedia page down to the good stuff:

Each level starts off as monochromatic, drawn in three shades of grey, and needs three colours to be collected to complete it. The player [is] a wizard who has taken the form of a green ball…

The wizard himself is not capable of collecting paint droplets, and is initially capable of very limited movement, bouncing up and down at a fixed rate, with the player only controlling a speed of rotation, and thus how fast it will move horizontally after next touching the ground. Collecting green pearls … gives the player tokens which can be used to “buy” enhancements, such as… a companion known as Catellite. Catellite (ostensibly the wizard’s cat) is also spherical in form… Only Catellite is capable of collecting paint droplets; the player has to use it to do so. … As well as droplets of primary colours, sometimes droplets of other colours also appear, having various effects. These include:

Light blue – causes a “filth raid”, where a wave of fast-moving enemies appear, shooting bullets at the player.

Grey – changes Catellite into an “Indestructacat”, making it invulnerable to enemies.

White – gives an extra life.

Purple – changes Catellite into a “mutant cat”, causing it to disobey the player’s controls.

Black – causes “freaky bits”, turning most of the scenery black.

I love how much weirder video games used to be. They had to be, just to explain what was going on with the pixels on screen. The games makes more sense when you see it in action (skip to 5:15 if you want to see the wizard in his wizard form)(also, this video leaves a lot of room at the beginning for the intro song, which you’ve already heard above):

There’s a much better write up on Wizball here, including information on how to get it running on your fancy, modern computer.

I don’t think I’ve written a song that starts with X yet. I should do that. Is X still a cool letter, or is has it been played out? I guess that depends on context.

Actually, I never have time, but some weeks, it shows! This is one of those weeks, so I’m going to fill space with some commercials for various “as seen on TV” wizards.

First, I will make a few points.

I love in commercials when they show how hard is to do something that is actually quite simple. These scenes are usually in black and white, and feature someone who is extreeeeeeeeeemely frustrated with their task. The Vidalia Chop Wizard commercial below starts with one of these scenes.

I also like when, in cases where there is absolutely no need for a product, a commercial has to invent a scenario to make it useful. See the Candy Wizard commercial below. Finally, a motion-sensing candy dispenser to replace unsanitary dishes! We were all waiting for the right technology to come along and replace the old-fashioned candy dish. This commercial doesn’t do it all that well, but it’s a good example of how people try to invent new fears and needs in order to sell you stuff.

Finally, I fully support adding the word “wizard” to product names. It’s cool to imagine a real Candy Wizard or Vidalia Chop Wizard, using their powers, respectively, to distribute candy and chop onions. Wizards are usually very good at what they do, and specialized, single-purpose wizards would probably be even better. When Gandalf the Grey became Gandalf the White he became more wise and powerful all around. Had he become Candy Gandalf he probably would have become far more wise and way more powerful, but only in matters of candy dispension.

Finally finally, I hope someone finds this article by searching for “candy gandalf.”

Finally finally finally, I’m sure I’ve left out some wizard products. Email me or contact me on one of my social media accounts and let me know of any ones I’ve forgotten. I would like to include everyone.

Finally finally finally finally, I think I should write and record a song called “Candy Gandalf” for the deluxe edition of Wizard Planet.

Finally finally finally finally finally, I guess this wasn’t actually that short.

Below, you’ll find an interactive word search puzzle full of wizard names and wizard-related terms. When you spot a word, you can click on the first letter and then the last, and it will be crossed off the list. I know a lot of my readers are secretly reading from work, so this should take a good chunk out of your day and get you to the weekend faster. It might also make you smarter.

Here’s a soundtrack for your gaming:

And here’s the puzzle. Enjoy! If you finish it, send me a screenshot, and I’ll send you a free song or a congratulatory email or something (or nothing!).

One thing I’ve figured out as I’ve been writing these blog posts is that I’m not a great writer. In my head, my thoughts seem very multi-dimensional and fascinating, but when I put them on paper (on monitor?), they seem, to me, straight out of the pages of Duh magazine. But someone who is effective at communicating some crazy thoughts is comic book writer and wizard Alan Moore.

I’m sure you’ve heard of him, but if not, there’s plenty of information for you out there, and a ton of books. He even had a new comic book out just a few weeks ago.

Now that you’re all caught up on the life and works of Alan Moore, I thought this edition of Wizard Wednesday would be a good opportunity to link you some writing from around the Internet concerning the Watchmen prequels DC Comics (subsidiary of Time Warner) is farting out later this year. Like I said, my ability to communicate complex ideas in written form is questionable. Thankfully, some other people on the net have written about this, and hyperlinks are the circulatory system of the World Wide Web. Before you click on these links, though, I’d like to apologize for using Alan Moore’s Wizard Wednesday to focus on such a negative thing. I’ve just seen too many reactions this project that are along the lines of, “Huh, Jae Lee is pretty good—maybe I’ll pick it up.” To make up for this post, I’ll try to track down another Moore-related wizard to write about in a future installment. There’s probably at least one in Smax. Okay, on to the links!

First, here’s the Wikipedia page on the project: Before Watchmen.

Here’s Tom Spurgeon’s piece, “Twenty-One Not Exactly Original Notes On More Watchmen, Written At A Slight Remove.” Spurgeon is an effective communicator, and he tosses out a lot of brainsnacks for your mind to chew on.

Then there’s Eric Stephenson’s shorter post, “NO FUN.” Stephenson is the publisher of Image Comics, who put out some of my favorite current comics.

And here’s a nice summary that uses links and bullet points like this very blog post, but more effectively, from David Brothers: “if newsarama knew better, it would do better.”

There’s more out there than that, but I don’t want you to spend the whole day in a bad mood.

I don’t know if it’s worth much, but my original reaction to this news was, “Oh well, that sucks, but it’s the same thing that’s happened over and over again in comics: a big company uses shady tactics to wrestle away someone’s original idea and then sucks every drop of life out of it, Skeksi-style. Why is this a bigger deal than usual?” I didn’t think it was a good thing, but I didn’t see what made this time different. Having thought and read more about it, I’ve realized that in many ways it is different. I’ll use a fancy HTML ordered list to arange a few thoughts:

This is happening now. We’ve already been through what happened with Kirby, Siegel & Shuster, Steve Gerber, and others. We’ve seen the formation of Image Comics. One of the founders of Image Comics is now co-publisher at DC, even! It’s crazy that a major comic book publisher can still get away with this stuff, and it’s crazy that a bunch of supposedly top-tier writers and artists would involve themselves.

Why would anyone who enjoyed Watchmen be interested in reading this? Really! Not only is it not by the original creators, but one of the original creators is actively, loudly objecting to its existence. I really enjoy the original Ian Fleming James Bond books, but I have no interest in reading any James Bond books written after his death by other authors. It just seems pointless. What I like about the books is the way they are written, so, to me, that disinterest is only natural. But, even if I did want to read the non-Fleming books, and I can’t see why I would, I think I would give me pause if Ian Fleming’s ghost rose from his grave and told me he was against the idea. I think in ghost language that sounds like “booooo.” Maybe I wouldn’t understand. But Alan Moore is alive, and he doesn’t need to speak ghost language (though he probably can). We all know he’s against this.

Look at this tacky thing! If someone had run this image as a parody in Mad Magazine (another Time Warner production!), I would have thought it was spot-on, hilarious commentary on the comic book industry. As reality, it’s pretty ugly. One thing I did not think while reading Watchmen was, “You know what would make this comic better? If none of the people who made this great were working on it, and if all the characters looked like He-Man characters who’d been sprayed with a thick coating of Pam.”

Okay, that’s enough of that. There are plenty of great comic books out there to read. Tomorrow I will get back to shamelessly promoting my music.
