Recording ChartIt’s been a while since I’ve posted one of these. We’re deep into the recording of Album 2. Bass is done, rhythm guitars are done, drums are done, some lead guitar is done, and some synth is done. Vocals are very not done! It’s been a busy summer so far.

The next album will, barring any big changes, be ten songs at somewhere between 35 and 40 minutes long. It has a different feel than Wizard Planet. I’m not the best judge, but I think the songs are less tightly wound, and there’s an overall hot summer vibe (not to a Beach Boys extent, but moreso than Wizard Planet). I want the album to sound like you could fry an egg on it.

I’m mixing songs as we go, to get a feel for what needs work, what needs to be re-recorded, or what needs additional parts. I’m trying to push myself to be better, or at least learn some new things, so there have been some changes in the recording and mixing process this year. A big change is that this time I’m incorporating more real drums. On Wizard Planet, there are a smattering of real drums, but the drum sound on that album is mainly a mix of HR-16 and Oberheim drum samples. For Album 2, we’ve recorded real drum tracks for every song. These are mixed with samples to make a drum sound that rides the line between audio fact and fiction. I think it will be fun to listen to.

On the side, I’ve also been working on the next Wizard Planet single, which comes out next week. Get ready for that!
