The Making Of Album 2: Part 3: Recording Begins
I started recording songs for album 2 (and for other projects, maybe) a few weeks ago. When I recorded Wizard Planet I did all of the rhythm guitar tracks in one condensed period near the beginning of the process. This time, I’m working slightly less efficiently, recording more of each song as I go. It’s helping me to get a feel for the album’s sound early on. Plus, I think it’s good to change the process a little each time to keep things fresh. I started by working on a few song ideas that did not seem quite appropriate for the album, just to get warmed up. I didn’t and I still don’t know what I’m going to do with these tracks. I may use them for B-sides, or I may put together some kind of free EP or a series of EPs. I’d like to make a seven inch on some cool, colored vinyl, but that would be really expensive!
Side note: does anybody want to fund a cool, colored vinyl 7 inch?
As far as album 2 proper goes, all of the “drum” tracks are pretty much done. Beyond that, there are two songs that are nearly finished, barring final vocals and overdubs. That leaves quite a lot of work left to do before I have a finished album, but it’s fun, and I don’t think I was any further along in the process at this time last year (when I was working on Wizard Planet). The new wrinkles this year (other than those on my face) are that, while trying to record these new songs, I am also rehearsing for live shows, preparing a new single (it should be out soon!), and working with Mike to finish up the new Hex Map album.
If anyone is curious, the two album tracks that I have made some progress on so far are called “Some Ladies” and “Thighs.” Tantalizing titles!
